In addition to teaching Basque language and culture, various activities focused on Basque culture are being carried out in readerships around the world. An example of this is the Basque Language and Culture reader, which recently organized a conference on June 21 at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. The conference aimed to bring together professors, researchers, and students interested in endangered languages, with a specific focus on Basque.
The Goethe University Institute of Empirical Linguistics has invited the linguist Ibon Manterola to speak at the conference. Manterola, who is a professor at the UPV/EHU and a member of UNESCO / UNITWIN Chairs, will be discussing the topic of “Basque-medium education and its contribution to the revitalization of the language: current challenges”. His analysis will focus on the language model used in schools and its impact on the normalization process of the Basque language, as well as the controversies surrounding recent sociolinguistic surveys.
Ibon Manterola, who holds a PhD in linguistics and has published his doctoral thesis on Basque language immersion in early childhood education in 2014, is expected to provide valuable insights during the conference. The event, supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute and the University of Goethe Institute for Romance Studies, aims to shed light on the importance of Basque-medium education in the preservation and promotion of the Basque language and culture.
