Bombardier Transportation’s Head of Rail Control Solutions, Richard Hunter, has announced that the CITYFLO 650 train control technology will be implemented in the system in Frankfurt to prepare it for a digital future. This communication-based system can be installed without disrupting ongoing operations and tight schedules as it can work alongside the existing signalling technology without requiring the system to be shut down. This marks the second time that the CITYFLO 650 system will be used in Germany, with it already being in operation at airports in over 35 countries worldwide.
The fully automatic CITYFLO 650 communication-based train control system (CBTC) has been connecting Terminals 1 and 2 at Frankfurt Airport, known as “SkyLine”, since 1994. The system utilizes 18 INNOVIA 100 vehicles that run every 90 seconds at peak times to the four stations, ensuring that millions of passengers and guests can safely and comfortably reach their destinations within the terminals around the clock. The technology has been successfully implemented in airports in various countries such as the USA, China, Spain, Thailand, India, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil.
Overall, the CITYFLO 650 technology will enhance the efficiency and reliability of the railway system in Frankfurt, paving the way for a more advanced and digitally integrated future. The proven success of this system at airports globally demonstrates its effectiveness in providing safe and seamless transportation solutions for passengers and travelers. With its ability to work alongside existing technologies and without the need for system shutdowns, the implementation of the CITYFLO 650 system promises to be a seamless and beneficial upgrade for the railway system in Frankfurt.
